Prominent places to visit in Delhi

Red Fort (Lal Qila)

Mughal emperor Shah Jahan began construction of the massive fort in 1638 and it was completed in 1648. Red Fort attracts large number of tourists from different parts of the world. Red Fort is also known as “Lal Qila”, due to the red sandstone used in making it. The compound of this monument comprises of many buildings like the Diwan-I-Aam, Mumtaz Mahal, Rang Mahal, Khas Mahal and many others. Red Fort is also listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Humayun’s Tomb

This mausoleum was built in the year 1565 by Mughal emperor Humayun’s wife Haji Begum (Bega Begum). It was the first garden-tomb of the Indian subcontinent and has the grave of Mughal emperor Humayun. It is enclosed by lush green Mughal styled garden and also consists of many fountains giving an amazing architectural look. This monument is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Jama Masjid

This mosque is also known as Masjid-i Jahan-Numa and was built in between 1644 – 1656 by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Jama Masjid is the largest mosque in India and has a big courtyard, wherein 25,000 people can offer prayers at a single point of time. This monument is comprised of three gates, two minarets and four towers.

Qutub Minar

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the second largest minaret in India and was built in 1192 by Qutab-ud-din Aibak. It is 240 feet (73 meter) tall and first three storeys are made of red sandstone; the fourth and fifth storeys are of marble and red sandstone. This monument is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has a variety of inscriptions that are in Nagari and Arabic characters.

India Gate

This war memorial was previously known as “All India War Memorial” and is dedicated to the 82,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives in World War I and Afghan wars. The foundation stone was laid in the year 1921 and was inaugurated in 1931 by Viceroy Lord Irwin. The walls of this memorial have the names of the martyr soldiers and comprised of a black marble plinth, capped by war helmet, with reversed rifle, bounded by four eternal flames and was built beneath the soaring Memorial Archway.

Lotus Temple

This lotus shaped monument denotes Bahai faith and was completed in 1986. People from different religions can freely visit this temple, as there is no restriction on the entry. Lotus Temple is built of sand, cement, white marble and dolomite. This temple has twenty-seven white marble petals with nine pools.
